I really enjoyed this story. The Metal Cowboys are wonderful and I can't wait for the next story! My only comment would be that the mystery of her past was drawn out very long. It worked with the story and the character but the middle of it got frustrating. Which I guess was the point. Anyway! Great great read and looking forward to the next one!

Wow, everyone out there- read this book; it will help uncover the ignorance and self-deception that so many fail to see deep from within. If we can admit we are all sinners, then we can admit that much of the sins we commit comes from a tongue lacking in prudence and fortitude.

Not bad, especially the first four chapters....

I am using this as a text for a Literacy Across the Curriculum course in a teacher education program. The first four chapters are useful for pre-service teachers across the content areas, and across the K-12 spectrum. One criticism would be that Chapter four takes the readers into a rather lengthy description of what administration and community should be doing to aide the classroom teacher...not too useful to pre-grad students, in my opinion....

Excellent resource with ideas/worksheets to use. The table of contents is NOT helpful as it does not list the actual reading strategies, resources, or graphic organizers, but what is actually in the book is VERY helpful.

«I am trying to learn web development for many years. Wihout required education (and I've studied liberal arts), without mentors. What I have in the end? Roughly speaking, nothing. The reason is that there are a way too many tools to solve same problem. For example, lets start with python. Without properly learning it, switch to ruby. Then there is an understand that it would have been better to learn some front-end first... etc etc.
And in the book there is a concrete path: from where to start and what you should avoid. It's good when there is someone who already climed the mountain which you are only beginning to climb and when this someone can show you the right direction and the next step to make. That's way I think the book in general is well written, it's useful and it will find it's reader.»

Guide into the world of web development when you don't know where to get started

As a senior web developer working for an international company that began as a small startup, I sometimes get asked (typically by people who know just a bit of programming): how do you become a web developer?

There are two ways. The long way is to study four years of computer science and then do a few internships. The short way is to sit down with a computer, get started and apply for a practical job as soon as possible. For learning web development the short way, all resources are out there on the internet. But you need to find them. K. Shirinkin's book can help you do exactly that.

The very short reference is a guide into the world of web development when you don't know where to get started. It covers the most important practical topics in a web developer's work (e.g. editors, Unix, Git, CSS, HTML, JS, Ruby as backend) each in a chapter of just two or three pages. Each chapter summarizes one topic and contains pointers to free online resources such as tutorials or references. You can then use these resources to actually learn the topics in depth. The author's choice is to focus on a Ruby-on-Rails stack. The book is a very quick read and ensures you cover the most important domains of web development. The writing is easy and does not require technical knowledge.

The descriptions and references outline some of the most important practical basics of web development. These basics do not change as quickly as many trends in the field. Therefore, it seems worth reading to me (even if the days of RVM may be numbered). If you read it and study the referenced material, I believe this book may very well help you to educate your self to become a web developer.

Straight to the point pearls of wisdom for the beginner

A brief and clear introduction to web development. A great guide for the do-it-yourself learner. It's chock-full of wisdom from an experienced programmer and links to online resources that go into depth on each of the topics covered.

I was planning on giving this book four stars as I at first thought that the book didn't dive as deeply into some of the topics as I wanted - like Testing for example. Then, as I struggled when testing out two projects in different versions of Rails I came back to the book and paid more attention to the rvm/rbenv section. The solution was there all along and I had just not read it carefully enough! It's not a book with many words that shows you how to do things over and over again until you understand. It's a book of few words that goes straight to the point. I just needed to pay attention more closely.

Also, the links at the end of every section point to some of the best online free resources I've seen to dive deeper into that topic.

Only thing I would change is, perhaps, that the big cover images in each section don't look so great on my Kindle.

The guide is incredibly useful for a beginner, who just makes first steps in web development. It explains step by step which topics should be learned and why they deserve your attention. I doubt an experienced developer will find anything useful in this book, because the main goal of author – to give a direction to a newbie and it done with 100% quality.

Derek Gillman is Executive Director and President of the Barnes Foundation. A former President of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Deputy Director of the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, and Keeper of the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts at the University of East Anglia, he is a member of the Association of Art Museum Directors and is currently President of the International Cultural Property Society.
