Very interesting book!!! I highly recommend!

I bought this book because I was writing a paper on true crime. I wanted something a little different. This fit the bill! The author includes the cultural implications with the story so that is very interesting. These stories are so gruesome that they could be straight out of a movie! The first story is about a woman who is beaten to death and then gotten rid of in a macabre way. The second story is about a kidnapping of a 17 year old girl. The third story is about a jealous woman. Overall the book is very interesting!!!

Amazing book! It scared me a little sometimes, but I enjoyed it all the way trough. Lillian does a good job by taking the reader into these crime stories. I loved the first story the most, I learned a lot from it. I got to understand the Asian culture better and it also showed me a darker side of Asia. Great stories and I recommend anyone to read them! Thank you very much Lillian!

Academic and Fascinating

This rendering of the historical changes in Russia prior to the Soviet revolution is fascinating. To understand the Russian nation one must understand how it has transpired over the centuries and this excellent piece of historical writing helps to put that all into perspective. Primarily it raised questions in my mind about our own country, noting that we are in the transition from a Judeo-Christian nation to one that is secular. When that happened in Russia, it changed the ethics, the sociology, the economy and the ethnic culture of the nation. The rest is history.

Misnomer

Based on the title, I hoped to find a history of Russian Orthodoxy. Instead, the book seems obsessed only with how and when Russian leaders described Russia as distinctly the heirs of the Orthodox faith, in other words the third Christian Empire or "kingdom of God": beginning with Rome, followed by Byzantium, and finally Russia. There are certainly merits to the historical information, but the book is neither chronologically linear, nor a history of Russian faith. Instead, it is a perusal of a national idea, in apparently nonlinear form.

Grade 7 Up—Lola ("grandmother" in Tagalog) has just died, and Jesse is reluctant to visit her home in the Philippines. He was afraid of her because she was rumored to have magical abilities, and because he thinks she tried to drown him when he was a baby. Jesse listens to family members tell stories about her as he tries to adjust to their strange mix of superstitions and religion. Lola is one of several dead characters in this book, and they tie into another reason that the boy is worried about this trip. Jesse is an unusually nuanced character, both in relation to his family and to readers. When he sees something extraordinary, it's unclear if he is dreaming, hallucinating, or if he has inherited his grandmother's abilities. Torres's gradual revelation of details will keep readers hanging until they learn the truth. Or's artwork uses sepia tones and smooth lines, and features characters with cute button eyes. But the sweet images can quickly turn horrific when Jesse has his visions. Lola ends with a cliff-hanger that could be resolved in a sequel but that just might have to be resolved by readers' imaginations.—Andrea Lipinski, New York Public Library

Torres and Or's tale is the sort of quiet horror story that moves along simply, lulling you into false security, before twisting quickly in another direction right at the end. The details of Jesse's powers are doled out slowly, not just thrown right at you, and so it's easy to think that his reluctance to travel is due to being uncomfortable in a different country, being annoyed by his relatives, or just being a young teen. It's not until we begin to see his visions during Lola's funeral that we realize just why Jesse is as nervous as he is. Then, as his cousin Maritess begins to try to help him deal with his powers, we think that he might just be alright. Maybe he'll learn to handle the visions, maybe his parents will be okay with his abilities as they were accepting of Lola's, maybe things will work out. It's a comforting thought that makes the final twist work even more effectively.

Or's art is as quiet as Jesse is. The characters' rounded faces seem gentle, so when Jesse's visions of death and decay begin, they are as jarring as a rotting corpse in a flower bed. But even though Or's art can be shocking, this is still horror that is appropriate for most middle school audiences. The blood and guts are kept to a minimum, used sparingly for effect, with only three pages having zombie-style (meaning: guts falling out) illustrations. The horror is built more from the looks on Jesse's face. He is tortured by what he sees, pained by the knowledge that the world isn't the safe, easy place that many people believe it to be. Maritess' respect for Jesse's abilities and her slight jealousy of his inheritance of Lola's powers is evident on her face, but that look soon begins to fade as she realizes what his visions have cost him.

Though readers are left unsure of Jesse's fate at the end of this volume--and though there is no guarantee of a second volume--that ending works perfectly for the type of horror this story is. Jesse's world is not safe, even if his story has a folkloric, almost old-fashioned quality to parts of it. The ending reminds us that he has issues beyond our ken to deal with at a very young age and we can't help but be sympathetic to them, even as we shudder at what he sees. Though the oversized format and the bright cover might not catch the eye of horror readers, with some booktalking this title is sure to find an audience. --Publishers Weekly School Library Journal

Creepy Ghost Story

Reason for Reading: This was a Cybils '10 nominee and as a panelist for Graphic Novels was required reading for me. The panelists did not receive a review copy from the publisher and like most other panelists, I, unfortunately, was unable to find a copy before our nominations were due. My copy from Interlibrary Loan request had just now come in.

This is a great ghost story told in the classic tradition and very worthy to be read by all ghost story aficionados. Jesse sees dead people, goblins, demons, monsters, etc. but he's learned to stop telling anyone since his parents' and teachers' reactions have been less than accepting. Now he and his family are traveling "home" to the Philippines; Jesse's parents immigrated to Canada when he was four and this is his third visit here. He hates it here. They have come for the funeral of his grandmother, "Lola" in Filipino. The culture of his Filipino family is quite hard for Jesse to accept, they are devout Catholics, carrying Rosaries, with beautiful shrines of worship in the house and yet they are steeped in the superstitions of tradition. Lola had the "gift" and he's heard all the stories of how she's helped the community and even defeated demons. Jesse fears what it will be like here now that Lola is gone.

A fabulous story with lots of creepy moments. The tension mounts slowly through the story. Things start happening right away and the reader becomes unsettled knowing something is not quite right. Gradually we learn what is going on, and Jesse realizes the truth as well. His cousin easily figures out Jesse's gift and berates him for hiding it, telling him it is a gift from God and he must use it. He has something he must do before he leaves. Then like any really good ghost story the book ends with a really fantastic heart-pounding shocker of an ending where one can only imagine what comes next. Loved this one!

Great book! Defintely something every should read once.

Got this book for ethics 101 and it actually is amazingly insightful. I sold back my other books but kept this. It allows you to understand the foundation of the United States and our law as government also better think rationally about rights and Liberty. Great historians, would be lawyers or ethics and debate lovers. Even the religious study part was fascinating. Loved the commentary for Christianity and Muslim as it helps understand complex government and political conflicts today stemming from religious rights.

One of the Best

The Ethics In America Study Guide and its companion volume, Ethics in America Source Reader, are among the very best books in print on the subject of ethics.

The author, Lisa H. Newton, begins at a point that even well-written texts fail to grapple with. That is, the question of where ethics arises from. Fundamentally, why should we concern ourselves about ethics? That is a question that, for the serious thinker, becomes harder to answer than first might seem apparent. It is also a question that helps us define ethics and develop an ethics that is applicable to the individual and to society.

Newton addresses this question by asserting some things that are true about human beings. That we are vulnerable in the sense that all "animals" are - we face risks and harm simply from the human condition. That we are social - that is, with very rare exceptions, we live amidst other human beings, and thus "rules" need to be set up to deal with conflicts that inevitably arise. These include those that relate to law in the formal sense, as well as those that do not. And finally, that we are rational beings. No other life forms, as far as we know, are both animal and rational. We experience harm, pain and loss in a unique way that in part defines us as human.

These three basic facts about humans lead to a series of moral imperatives that are the subject of the book. Such issues as justice, welfare and dignity are woven into the chapters. The thing that makes ethics hard is that values come into conflict. The dilemma is to figure out "what to do." In other words, ethics is about human action in the context of human communities, not merely about abstract philosophy.

Further, if anyone wants to arrive at a single, right answer to all questions dealing with right and wrong action, they will be disappointed. On the other hand, UNLESS one devotes the effort to delving into the types of questions posed by Newton in her Ethics in America series, then that person can be set hopelessly adrift in the world. I think that we see people every day who seem to live with little ethical guidance other than hunches, emotional reactions and prejudice.

The world is full of armchair philosophers (including those found in bars, classrooms, boardrooms and living rooms). But whether their conversations can really be deemed based on ethical reasoning is an open question. By reading, and using, a text like Newton's Ethics in America, these everyday conversations can potentially take on some real meaning.

Very very dry and the tone often seems condescending. Word to the wise, there is an additional book of supplemental reading that was NOT listed on my required course materials list but was definitely heavily referenced throughout the text, and on my exams. I was taking an ethics course while deployed and would not likely have gotten the supplemental material in enough time to complete the class by the time I realized my lack.

The theory covered by Anthony Knapp in this book is, therefore, a window into a broad expanse of mathematics--including class field theory, arithmetic algebraic geometry, and group representations--in which the concidence of L functions relates analysis and algebra in the most fundamental ways.

Developing, with many examples, the elementary theory of elliptic curves, the book goes on to the subject of modular forms and the first connections with elliptic curves. The last two chapters concern Eichler-Shimura theory, which establishes a much deeper relationship between the two subjects. No other book in print treats the basic theory of elliptic curves with only undergraduate mathematics, and no other explains Eichler-Shimura theory in such an accessible manner.

So much insight for so little assumed background

Usually the Princeton Notes are written for specialists in the field. This book by Knapp is a definite exception. The didactic quality is excellent, and the background assumed of the reader is meager compared to what you can take away by reading this book. The reader is only assumed to have an undergraduate background in complex analysis and modern algebra...not bad considering the frontiers that Knapp reaches in this book. The Eichler-Shimura thoery is treated in the next to last chapter of the book, and at a very understandable level. After reading the book one takes away an understanding of many deep results in the theory of elliptic curves. The author gives the reader a rare gift for most modern mathematical texts: insight. Proofs are given for most of the results, but the main emphasis is on understanding how elliptic curves are studied and why they are useful mathematical objects. This is definitely a book to be read by everyone interested in the theory of elliptic curves. String theorists, cryptoanalysts, physicists, and aspiring mathematicians whose interests and applications are in the theory of elliptic curves should definitely read this book. A mere $50.00 will get you a copy...but it is definitely worth four times that. If you are coming to the theory of elliptic curves for the first time and have a background in comnplex analysis and modern algebra, read first Joseph Silverman's book on rational points on elliptic curves, and then Knapp's book. Then move on to Silverman's two books on the arithmetic of elliptic curves. For both theory and applications, this sequence should prepare anyone for entering this very interesting world of elliptic curves. If only more books in modern mathematics were written like Knapp's Elliptic Curves...............

An Impressive Retelling of Ismail's Military Failures

John Dunn's book fills an unfortunate gap - few English-language studies have been published regarding late 19th century Egyptian military history.

The author begins by revisiting some of Egypt's military achievements in the mid-1800s, most of which took place under the leadership of esteemed ruler Muhammad Ali. Ali's formidable military leadership coupled with changes such as increased manpower and the use of battle-hardened foreign mercenaries led to impressive Egyptian victories in the Sudan, Greece, Arabia, Syria, and Anatolia, and the establishment of a large (if short-lived) empire.

Contrast these successes with Dunn's primary topic of interest: the military failures that marked the 16-year reign (1863 to 1879) of Ali's grandson, Isma'il. Inspired by Ali's example, the ambitious yet flawed Isma'il endeavored to reestablish Egypt as a regional power in northwest Africa and continue the country's modernization.

His incompetent leadership, however, hamstrung those ambitions. Though a cunning politician and skillful diplomat, Khedive Isma'il tended to make poor strategic and personnel decisions, thus striking a blow to army morale from which it would never recover. In addition, a variety of broader political and economic forces beyond his control conspired against him. For example, the US Civil War allowed Egypt to monopolize the cotton export market and Ismail to increase spending. With the end of the War however, cotton prices plummeted, leading to massive public debt and the need to secure (predatory) loans from European banks, which only worsened the financial crisis.

In the end, Ismail's mismanagement led to his abdication and hastened British occupation of Egypt that would continue for the next half century.

Dunn's descriptions of the military debacles in Abyssinia are especially detailed and interesting. Despite a massive advantage in firepower, Ismail's ambitions in the Horn of Africa were doomed by internal tensions within the army's leadership, poor tactical decisions, and the brilliant leadership of Abyssinian leader Yohannis. While the entire book is strong, these final few chapters are surely its highlight.

'The political and military reforms introduced by Mohammed Ali from 1805 to 1848, turned Egypt into a major player in the Middle East, with efficient armed forces and an empire that for a time reached into Asia, the Sudan, and the Horn of Africa. In this account the Egyptian armed forces and military policy in the era of Mohammed Ali's grandson, Ismail, Prof. Dunn (Valdosta State) devotes four of his fifteen chapters to the 50 years preceding Ismail’s accession to examine the reforms and operations that saw Egyptian troops campaigning in the Balkans, Anatolia, the Sudan, and even Mexico. He then spends three chapters on military policy and organization, efforts to develop a domestic munitions industry, and the complex relationship between the Khedive and the Sultan. Dunn then addresses Egyptian expansion into the Sudan in one chapter. This led almost inevitably to a clash with Abyssinia (1873-1876), a protracted encounter that takes up the bulk of the book, and resulted in defeat and Ismail’s deposition. Dunn does an excellent job explaining complex and even contradictory cultural, political, and military institutions, and notable individuals in Egypt, the Ottoman Empire, and adjacent areas, making his account more readily understandable to readers who are likely to be unfamiliar with the region. This is an excellent discussion of how Egypt almost managed to turn itself into a modern military power, and why it failed.'
