About the Author
Steve Schmeck and his wife Sue Robishaw live on their backwoods homestead on 80 remote acres in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. They live in an ‘underground’, sod-roofed home that they built themselves, have a large organic garden that provides much of their food, and power their off-grid homestead with solar power. Steve has been involved in art and woodworking since he was young, and it has permeated his life since. Majoring in Art in college, Steve emerged into his art career in the late 70’s when he decided to realize his vision of living and sculpting in the Northwoods. He is now a nationally recognized bowl and spoon carver with both bowls and spoons in many private collections. Other areas of interest are music (he is a fiddler), musical instrument restoration and repair, and recumbent bicycles (for years he rode a home-built, wood recumbent). Lately he has been celebrating his birthday by riding his age in miles on that day; last year, 70 miles. Next on his agenda is building a skin-on-frame dory for rowing along the shores of the northern Great Lakes.

The information I needed

I don't know Steve personally, but I purchased his book "Make Your Own Treadle Lathe". In it he offered to answer question. I had a clarification question that he answered right away. In that conversation, I mentioned that I was looking to make fifes (wooden flutes) as what his reason for making his lathe. I asked if he had any tips. He sent me the rough draft for this book! It had exactly the information I was looking for and not able to find with internet research. Yes, it is not a huge amount of information, but it's making a fife, not a car engine. It's a tube with holes. I think this book is great and look forward to seeing the finished book having seen the rough draft. I am more than happy to buy this book and recommend it to anyone looking to take on this specific project.

Well-written, detailed instructions on how to make a wooden flute (simple flute as for folk music). It also includes numerous helpful hints and suggestions for personalizing and fine-tuning your flute to meet your needs. Great do-it-yourself book...likely the only one you'll need from start to finish!

Whether you are interested in creating a wooden flute "from scratch" or wish to experience the process through a true craftsman's "voice", Schmeck's book is a jewel. His step-by-step explanations - accompanied by excellent photos - are clear and concise. A nice touch is that the author makes sure the reader understands how to play these beautiful instruments. I very much enjoyed the book. A wooden flute is a joy forever!
