THE LAST 5 YEARS is really a hard read..primarily because there isn't a libretto. (book) The play is told through two people, a man and a woman who fall in love. But I didn't anticipate that the book was told through music and lyrics, and I didn't really enjoy the full impact of the author's writing because I do not have the CD. It probably plays better than it reads...but this is a good play to consider for small theatre companies with a small budget and space.

The recording of The Last Five Years is haunting - well nigh addictive. The two superb talents, Sherie Renee Scott and Norbert Leo Butz performing the words and music of Jason Robert Brown make the CD and MP3 indispensable. To read the words and lyrics by that wunderkind Jason Robert Brown puts the book in a premier location in my library.

Former RAF Tornado Navigator and Gulf War veteran John Nichol sets out on a personal journey to discover what happened to 617 Squadron after the flood.

The role RAF 617 Squadron in the destruction of the dams at the heart of the industrial Ruhr has been celebrated in book, magazine and film for more than seventy years.

On the 17th May 1943, 133 airmen set out in 19 Lancasters to destroy the Möhne, Eder and Sorpe dams. 56 of them did not return. Despite these catastrophic losses, the raid became an enormous propaganda triumph. The survivors were feted as heroes and became celebrities of their time.

They had been brought together for one specific task – so what happened next? Of the 77 men who made it home from that raid, 32 would lose their lives later in the war and only 45 survived to see the victory for which they fought.

Few are aware of the extent of the Dambuster squadron’s operations after the Dams Raid. They became the ‘go to’ squadron for specialist precision attacks, dropping the largest bombs ever built on battleships, railway bridges, secret weapon establishments, rockets sites and U-boat construction pens. They were involved in attempts on the lives of enemy leaders, both Hitler and Mussolini, created a ‘false fleet’ on D-day which fooled the Germans, and knocked out a German super gun which would have rained 600 shells an hour on London.

In ‘After The Flood’, John Nichol retraces the path of 617 Squadron’s most dangerous sorties as their reputation called them into action again and again.

John Nichol is a former RAF flight lieutenant whose Tornado bomber was shot down on a mission over Iraq during the first Gulf War in 1991. He was captured and made a prisoner of war. In between those accomplishments, she became the first to swim the Strait of Magellan, narrowly escaped a shark attack off the Cape of Good Hope, and was cheered across the twenty-mile Cook Strait of New Zealand by dolphins. She even swam a mile in the Antarctic.

A year after that, she surpassed a lifelong goal by not only swimming the English Channel but setting a new men's and women's record in the process. Rather than be satisfied, Cox aimed still higher, conquering the Cook Strait in New Zealand, the Strait of Magellan and, the Cape of Good Hope, none of which had been swum before. Being the first to swim the Bering Sea from Alaska to what was then the Soviet Union is perhaps Cox's most impressive achievement, requiring a phenomenal amount of physical strength and endurance to withstand the chilly waters and diplomatic persistence to gain permission from Gorbachev during the Cold War. Swimming to Antarctica is Cox's remarkably detailed account of her major swims and all that went right and wrong with them. While there are plenty of highs, as one might expect in a memoir by so impressive an athlete, all is not sunshine and roses for Cox. Cox, one of the world's leading long-distance swimmers, has been a risk-taker ever since she was nine and chose the freezing water of a New Hampshire pool in a storm over getting out and doing calisthenics. After her family moved to California so she and her siblings could train as speed swimmers, she discovered long-distance ocean swimming. Her first open-water event, a team race across the Catalina Channel, convinced her to train for the English Channel. At 15, she broke the Channel record, and decided she needed a new goal. Up to this point, Cox's story reads like a fairy tale of hard work, careful planning and good support, crowned with success. It isn't until she competes in the Nile River swim that the tale turns ugly-she's swimming in raw sewage and chemical waste, fending off the dead rats and broken glass, so sick with dysentery she lands in the hospital. Undeterred, she plans more ambitious swims-around the shark-infested Cape of Good Hope, across Alaska's Glacier Bay-to prepare for her big dream, a swim from Alaska to the Soviet Union across the Bering Strait. While offering herself to researchers studying the effects of cold on the human body, her political goals are even larger: to bring countries and peoples together, using swimming "to establish bridges between borders." Cox ends her story with her swim to Antarctica, where she finishes the first Antarctic mile in 32-degree water in 25 minutes. Even though readers know she survived to tell the tale, it's a thrilling, awesome and well-written story.

As this inspiring memoir makes clear, swimming is Cox's life. "Cox is not just in the sea," notes the Rocky Mountain News, "she is one with it." Cox offers intimate glimpses into her mind as she conquers icy (Antarctic) or rat-strewn (Nile) waters--her doubts, joys, and observations of unfamiliar surroundings. It's a compelling narrative, but critics disagree on a few points. Is her writing poetic or reportorial? Does she offer a complete or one-sided picture of her life? Where's the larger historical perspective? Quibbles aside, Cox successfully and joyfully captures the mental, physical, and political (think: America, Russia, Bering Strait) battles she overcomes each time she jumps into new waters. "As far as I knew," she writes, "I would only be here once, and I wanted to live as much as I could."

Focus on the accomplishment, not the pain

Lynne Cox is such an inspirational writer that the reader concentrates on her exceptional accomplishments, both physical and mental, rather than the extreme pain and struggle it took to accomplish them. From her early teens, Cox has eliminated almost everything else from her life to dedicate herself to open-water swims in treacherous and freezing waters, including crossing the Bering Straight between Alaska and the Soviet Union, and swimming a mile in the Antarctic Ocean.

What I really loved about this book is the way Cox struggled not only with the physical challenges of the swims but also struggled to make the swims mean something more to the world at large. For example, the Bering Straight swim took something lik 16 years of meetings and negotiations to arrange, hundreds of donors and volunteers. But in the end that swim stood as a testament and metaphor for the improving connections between nations. Everywhere she goes, Cox seems to have inspired anyone fortunate enough to witness her. That this has come with a great deal of personal sacrifice--money troubles, social limitations, significant nerve damage--is humbly underplayed in the book. She has a kind of determination and self-confidence that transcends a particular athletic endeavour.

That Cox does not *look* like anyone's idea of an endurance athlete just adds to the inspiration -- she's 45 and she's swimming to Antarctica...so what's MY excuse?

Very cold bath

As a chubby nine-year-old, Lynne Cox was the slowest kid in the pool. But she loved swimming, so she kept plugging away at it. When the coach ordered her class out of the water because a storm was brewing, she got permission to keep swimming. When hail started falling, Cox kept swimming-alone-in a pool full of ice.

Scientists would later determine that her unique ratio of muscle to body fat made her anomalously suited to swimming long distances in water so cold, it would kill an ordinary swimmer within minutes. At 15, Cox swam the English Channel, breaking the world record. The next year, she went back to England and broke the record again.

It would be a mistake to think that Cox's new autobiography, Swimming to Antarctica: Tales of a Long-Distance Swimmer, is of interest only to swimmers. In fact, the book has more in common with heroic literature of the ancient world-like Beowulf and The Odyssey-than with the typical athlete's success story. Like those ancient heroes, Cox isn't satisfied with races that have a designated course. Instead, she looks for unique athletic challenges that only she can overcome. That's why, at 17, she fell out of love with channel swimming and, instead, took on the unknown-swimming icy lakes, straits and channels that had been thought impossible for a swimmer to breach. Her famous 1987 swim across the Bering Sea from Alaska to the Soviet Union took 10 years to plan, and the water, in August, was barely above freezing.

Although Cox isn't a professional writer, she has a keen eye for details that turn an important life experience into an entertaining story. Readers will be amused, for instance, by the English cab driver who told Cox she was too fat to swim the Channel-as he was driving her to the beach for that express purpose.

While other athletes were wooed by corporate sponsors, Cox had to finance her own projects. Her story is a powerful account of clinging hard to a bigger dream.

Four Stars for the Author, One Star for the Editor

As an avid swimmer and reader,this book was a bit of a disappointment for me. I truly admire the author's determination and swimming prowess but her character emerges as one dimensional, which I'm sure it is not. There is little reference to her non-swimming life. Am I to believe, for example, that she never had any romantic relationships all those years? Was her life entirely about long distance swimming? Where is she today, in her mid-forties?

I was also disappointed by the fact that there are no photos or maps ! How is that possible in such a book?

Also, I feel that least 50 pages of the current edition could have been dropped. I would like to have read more about Ms. Cox's training, nutrition, etc. I don't even know what she looks like (height, weight).

In short: good story, bad editor.

Over the course of the 20th century, there have been three primary narratives of American national identity: the melting pot, Anglo-Protestantism, and cultural pluralism/multi-culturalism. This book offers a social and historical perspective on what shaped each of these imaginings, when each came to the fore, and which appear especially relevant early in the 21st century.  These issues are addressed by looking at the United States and elite notions of the meaning of America across the 20th century, centering on the work of Horace Kallen, Nathan Glazer and Daniel Patrick Moynihan, and Samuel P. Huntington. Four structural areas are examined in each period: the economy, involvement in foreign affairs, social movements, and immigration. What emerges is a narrative arc whereby immigration plays a clear and crucial role in shaping cultural stories of national identity as written by elite scholars. These stories are represented in writings throughout all three periods, and in such work we see the intellectual development and specification of the dominant narratives, along with challenges to each. Important conclusions include a keen reminder that identities are often formed along borders both external and internal, that structure and culture operate dialectically, and that national identity is hardly a monolithic, static formation.

About the Author
Oliver Berry is a writer and photographer based in Cornwall. His first trip abroad was to the south of France at the tender age of two, and since then his travels have carried him from the chestnut forests of Corsica to the snow-tipped mountains of New Zealand's Southern Alps, and from the palm-fringed beaches of the South Pacific to the dusty deserts of the midwestern USA. Along the way he has learned a few useful skills, including how to catch Fijian sand crabs with your bare hands, the best way to avoid falling into a crevasse on the face of a glacier, and an excellent Samoan recipe for home-made mosquito repellent. He has also been drained by leeches, devoured by mosquitoes and deeply discouraged by the general calibre of aeroplane food, but his passion for world travel has somehow remained undimmed. Oliver first started writing for Lonely Planet in 2002, and has since written for many titles including France, Great Britain, England, Western Europe, Rarotonga & the Cook Islands and South Pacific & Micronesia. He graduated with a first-class degree in English Literature from University College London in 1999 and has written for a wide range of film, music and travel publications, including national newspapers, magazines, books, journals, encyclopedias and webzines. His writing has won several awards, including The Guardian Young Travel Writer of the Year and the TNT Magazine People's Choice Award. Not one of Lonely Planet's best guide books

Everyone who travels has their favorite travel series and mine is Lonely Planet. That said, I thought this guide did an adequate, but not super great job of covering Great Britain. If you are going to the major cities in GB you'll find nice coverage of the major sites. The guide will highlight museums, festivals, historical sites and more. BUT if you are going to do a drive around GB you'll find the book is very weak on the cities and surrounding countryside. For instance two stops on my upcoming trip are St. Andrews and Dundee Scotland--they aren't even mentioned or if they are I missed the references (looked in the appropriate geographical area and the index). Glasgow, Edinburgh and the Highlands are adequately covered. I also thought Wales was poorly covered. Having been to London several times, I can tell you if you are going for a short trip or for the first time, the guide will give you plenty of information to fill your days.

Very nice travel guide packed with beautiful color photos

This book is broken down into sections on different regions in Great Britain as follows: Scotland's Highlands & Islands, Edinburgh & Glasgow, Northern England, Wales, Central England, London, and Southern England.

I had been to London and other cities in G.B. back in 1993, and I can say that the travel guide brought back a lot of memories with the beautiful color photos.

It has all of the standard things you'd expect a travel guide to have, such as small maps, hotel detail (including top picks, phone numbers, websites, and approximate prices), dining, shopping, history, and tourist destination information.

I gave it four stars instead of five because the pages are very thick (heavy weight), and it makes this small-sized book extremely heavy (relatively speaking). It's not something I would want to carry around in my purse if I were trecking through Great Britain.

Too Many Places with Too Little Detail

I lived in England, in Liverpool and Leeds. My husband is a born a raised Scouser ( that's the English term for a Liverpudlian). I picked up this book partly out of curiosity about what it would say about those areas and partly to better school myself with some of the smaller city's that you see with teams in the FA Cup every year ( for Americans that's a big English only soccer tournament). I really think that the authors, whom Lonely Planet doesn't seem to disclose if their even from the U.K., tried to pack way too many locations into one book to its detriment. You barely get any information on any one place. For example, Liverpool is over 800 years old but it gets a blurb of 5.25 pages and a map in the Northern England section . This covers a tiny bit of the museums and galleries of this 2008 Culture Capital of Europe. It does mention Beatles tours and the ferry cross the Mersey. But misses so much like great parks, the city center, tons of historical sites, the club/ pub/ bar scene, and doesn't even mention Anfield! Or the blues stadium or Paddys Wigwam. And it doesn't give you interesting details like the old believe that if the mythological Liver Birds ever leave the city Liverpool would be destroyed. Leeds gets no mention though its the business capital of the north up in the Pennines which pass as their mountains. Cheshire, a city full of history and founded on the foot prints of an old Roman fort, is barely mentioned. A short drive from Liverpool is the Knowsley Safari Park and the best zoo ever in Cheshire. Neither of which is in the book.

Maybe if they had broken this down to just one country per book it could have given tourists a more fleshed out view. As it is it doesn't even have room for all the salient points of each area. I wouldn't recommend this as a good way for a first time visitor to decide what to make time for on their visit. It does give good info on how to travel around the countries though.
