Why Hospitality Facilities Management?

 

Buildings and land comprise two of the largest assets on hospitality businesses’ balance sheets.  As for operating the building, a hotel generally spends about 10-12% of gross revenue to maintain the property and pay for utilities.  An additional 3 — 7% (or more) is set aside each year to cover capital improvements to the building.  While restaurants’ expenses in this area are somewhat lower, the nearly 20% of gross revenue each year provides a compelling reason for any new manager in hospitality to be familiar with the asset that is consuming this money.

 

Why This Book?

 

This book will provide the foundation by which a new hospitality industry manager can make good decisions on operating and investing in this most important of assets.  The book will not teach any student how to perform repairs, install mechanical systems, or serve as the chief engineer in a hospitality property.  It will, however, provide basic knowledge of how facilities form the core product of our industry, how systems work, and a good vocabulary to use with facilities management staff, asset manager, and vendors or contractors.  This provides a foundation from which the student can expand his or her understanding of a particular facility.  Most importantly, the student will be able to ask the right questions (using the correct technical terms) and take the right steps to control costs and contribute to the bottom line of any facilities-intensive business.

 

Organization of the Book

 

This book is organized into three parts: 

• Part I:  The Impact of Facilities Management: provides a broad overview of various perspectives on the facility’s role in hospitality, how the facility is managed, and current issues and trends. 
• Part II:  Building Systems: introduces the student to the building and mechanical systems that control the built environment of the property. 
• Part III: Building Planning and Design: provides an overview of building exterior systems and the technical considerations required for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. 

Each chapter includes information on energy conservation and sustainable built environment practices, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the safety of all building occupants and complying with ever-changing codes and regulations.  Our goal is to ensure that students go forth into the hospitality industry not only providing excellent products and service, but providing them in the most ethical and cost-effective way possible.

Excellent narrator!

I'm glad this was quite short (only eight minutes long) as I don't think I could have listen to a whole story from this guy! I'll say though that this isn't my normal type of audiobook and I received this one free from the narrator to review.
That being said the narrator did a really good job and I'd listen to more of his work!

I read this book in Danish.

The author, Helen Hadsell, has won everything she ever wanted - cars, a trip to Hawaii, money and a microwave oven (why she would want such a dangerous thing as a microwave is beyond me, but everyone to their taste).

In the US there are apparently all sorts of competitions one can take part in. I've never noticed any in Denmark where I live and am not really interested in writing slogans for various firms, such as Coca-Cola and the like, but I'm sure many are.

What attracted me to Helen's book was her belief in the power of positive thinking.

She found out that winners of such competitions all had the following in common:

1) They decided what they wanted.
2) They imagined they had it.
3) They KNEW they would get it.

This is important information.

Helen was a Silva Mind graduate, which gave her a good basic understanding and knowledge of spiritual principles to help her with her various winning projects.

In this book, she tells us about various competitions she and her family participated in - what they did, and what they won.

Helen also provides us with lots of practical advice about what to do to win the various competitions. She often sent in up to fifty coupons for a specific competition, if the prize was particularly attractive. She impresses on us the importance of precisely following the rules and regulations of the firm offering the competition.

I see this book is at present enormously expensive on Amazon – I bought it as a paperback (in Danish) years ago. But if you can get hold of the book at a reasonable price and love competitions, I recommend that you get it.

This is a classic Law of Attraction book although it was not advertised as a Law of Attraction book. The author is a famous contest winner who used the creative power of intention and positive thinking to win her prizes. She won things from dozens of trips to a new house to lots of cash. Her story is a must-read!

This book will help you make "The Right Choice"

Originally published in 1995 and updated in 2000, Home Schooling is less a defense of home schooling than it is an argument for why you, too, should home school. In one of his speeches at the NICHE conference, Klicka made the point that the most important job we have as parents is to raise our children to know and love Jesus. In Home Schooling, Klicka makes the point that we cannot expect our children to think and act like Christians if they spend their whole day, five days a week, in an environment that teaches them to think and act like a secular humanist.

Home Schooling begins with an indictment of public schools, underscoring its propositional rather than defensive nature. Public schools, in general, are failing our children academically, morally, and philosophically. Particularly enlightening is chapter 3's recitation of the express goals of the founders of state education and of the professors at education colleges and the subsequent manifestation of those goals.

But all of that is just why you should avoid public schools. In Parts II and III, Klicka affirmatively addresses why you should home school. Klicka notes the Biblical principles supporting home schooling, the benefits of home schooling, and the large number of influential Americans who were home schooled. He also sets forth practical steps to successful home schooling--providing the encouragement you need to realize that you can do it--as well as the success home schoolers have in college.

Home Schooling goes on to recite the victories won against those with an interest in a public school monopoly. The victories have come in both the legislative and judicial branches. Klicka has firsthand knowledge of many of them and some of them have been truly miraculous. Included in these sections is a thorough, but easy to understand recitation of home schoolers' rights.

The book also includes a number of helpful appendices, including "The Difference Between Christian Education and Humanistic Education," "Fifteen Reasons to Home School Your Teenagers," and "The Social Worker Skit: How to Handle a Visit From a Social Worker."

Throughout the book, Klicka effectively refutes each of the criticisms directed toward home schooling. Given the documented success of home schoolers versus their public and private schooled peers, no one can legitimately claim academic deficiencies as a basis for opposing home schooling. What about socialization? The question is too simple. What kind of socialization is preferable? As a wise person once told me, proper socialization comes from modeling adults, not other children. The public school environment is an artificial one where our children only interact with, save their teacher, other kids their age. No other setting in society is like that.

The one criticism of the book that I can muster is Klicka's reliance on substantive due process arguments for the constitutional right to home school. "Substantive" due process (an oxymoron) is the underpinning of the U.S. Supreme Court's created right to abortion. Clearly, as an attorney in a court of law defending home schoolers, Klicka should latch onto anything the Supreme Court has given him, but in a book dealing with home schooling history and long-term strategies going forward, substantive due process is not something to rely on. It was made up out of thin air and could vanish just as easily, or could be applied arbitrarily.

In any event, Home Schooling is the perfect book for people already home schooling who will be encouraged that they have made the right decision and will gain a greater appreciation of the sacrifices those who started home schooling in the 1980s made, for people thinking about home schooling but are not sure they can do it, and for people trying to understand why their friends and family are home schooling rather than doing what just about everyone else does. It will remain a valuable part of my library.

LOTS of information about home schooling and its history

I read this book after hearing it recommended by Chuck Missler in one of his briefings. This book is filled with a lot of information on the historical background of home schooling here in America. It lists many examples of home schooled children that went on to become some of the most important people in American history (basically most of the founders of the USA). Klicka also has a lot of statistics that show the success of today's average home schooled students when compared to average public education students. The book has been around for years, and this is a new, updated, version of that old book. Since this book was first written the number of home schoolers has skyrocketed. After reading this book, one can fully understand why most public school teachers choose to send their own children to private schools (if they don't choose to home school). Klick know from where he speaks. He is the head of the Home School Legal Defense Association that assists home schoolers around the country. He and his wife have home schooled all of their children and he is dedicated to the cause as part of his religious convictions. Today, there a many people, including many non-religious ones, who are choosing to home school, and Klicka is one of the people who have made that option possible today by making sure their rights to do it are kept intact. If you have even the slightest interest in possibly home schooling your children, then this is the book to start with.

This is the book that convinced me to homeschool. It looks at the failure of the public school system in teaching our children, statistics regarding teachers, increase in crime, SAT scores, etc. and the political issues driving the public schools. Great book.

The first 5 or so chapters are great but after that comes the confusion

This text jumps around and repeats previously covered subject matter so much that I don't know if I'm coming or going! The first 5 or so chapters are great but after that comes the confusion. Plus, add in all the very unclear SPSS instructions and enter chaos. Didn't care for it at all.

Good book, lacking in back-of-book solutions

Decent book. My only complaint is that the answers in the back are only for odd # questions. There were times I really needed to understand an even numbered exercise, and the solution process was nowhere to be found.
