Not without reason is Binchy (Evening Class; Circle of Friends) most popular for her novels, as this unimpressive collection of short stories linked by the theme of travel-and-learn indicates. Although the time is now and the place usually Dublin, the writing is dated, dependent on such romantic-comedy movie devices as mistaken identity, switched suitcases, confidante becoming lover, the stranger who upsets all the old balances, the surprise presence of Mum at the restaurant of the out-of-the-way hotel intended for a tryst. The most promising of the batch is the title story, a series of letters between a mother who left Ireland and her daughter, the young woman who has gone there to see the village her mother grew up in. The characters here have depth and secrets not immediately apparent. The conflicts between mother and daughter mirror the conflicts the mother has about her homeland. Unfortunately, the remaining 13 stories touch on formulaic generational and gender misunderstandings. The characters are established early, the predictable plot mechanisms uncoil like the proverbial spring and the conclusions are socked home, often in a chirpy manner.

Good Commentary - Need additional languages

Obviously, a very scholarly work--however, there is signficant use of untranslated German (and some untranslated Latin and French as well). Those who have only English and Greek may find this disappointing.
Also, C.K. Barrett wrote two volumes. Volume I covers Acts 1-14; II covers 15-28. Although the book description does not say so, what you will receive when you order this book is Volume II.

First place on Acts in any language

Barrett delivers what you'd expect in the ICC, and from Barrett: thorough critical comments, trenchant observations on the theology of Acts. Vol. 2 is supposed to be out soon, a fitting climax to an enormously productive scholarly career. This is the place to begin serious study of any subject related to Acts. Expect to be challenged.

I prefer Witherington; ICC is scholarly, but too scholarly

In agreement with other reviewers, I have to say that by not speaking theological technical German, I am left suspecting that I am missing out on Barrett's best points, becuase he seems to clinch each arguement with lots of german quotations!

For me, Witherington has written a similarly scholarly work, but spends more time in the text, guiding you through. Also, there is greater flow of thought, so I still manage to follow what is happening in the text, as well as following the debate: not quite so with Barrett's.

The “hunger for power” by both developed and developing emerging markets and recent catastrophes such as the major blackout in the Northeastern USA in 2003 brought electrical power grid to the forefront in the 21st century with two challenging of making the grid “green” and “smart”. The word “smart” or “intelligent” has almost become ubiquitous in every field of humanities, sciences and engineering and anything that is embedded with some kind of human intelligence-like feature by using soft computing tools such as neural networks, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms and other evolutionary tools, is dubbed as “smart”. The twin driving forces to make electric grid are “control” and “static and dynamic optimization” requiring modeling, identification, estimation, robustness, resilience, safety and security.

This edited book, composed of contributions from leading researchers in power, control and communication systems, has three broad categories of Architectures and Integration, Modeling and Analysis, and Communication and Control. An important and recent topic on vulnerability and cyber-security of power grids is presented. Other important topics are renewable energy and plug-in vehicles and wide-area monitoring and control using synchronized phasor measurements.

A Mini-Bible

Prof. Barlow has distilled his knowledge and 25+ years of teaching experience into 190 pages. The text presents the theory very concisely without sacrificing rigor. All the terminology is carefully defined and the meanings are made clear through examples. The examples appear to be drawn from what has been successful in the classroom, and are much more useful than the examples given in early works in this field. The book is divided into three parts, plus a 6 page Introduction to the history and background of the subject. The first part covers Failure Data Analysis. This part defines the terms used later, and develops the mathematics needed in a very intuitive way. The second part covers the Economics of Maintenance Decisions in eleven pages! The third part covers System Reliability. Individual chapters cover Network Reliability, System Failure Analysis, Availability and Maintainability, Influence Diagrams, and Making Decisions Using Influence Diagrams. The book gives very practical, useful information, reflecting its engineering origins. It is the kind of book you will go back to often.
